This year NJGCA is organizing an exciting event to celebrate our 80th anniversary! On September 15, 2017 we will be hosting an 80th Anniversary Gala in Edison, NJ. You should have all received a formal invitation in the mail.  This event is intended to honor YOU, the members who have helped us achieve 80 years of success. There will be an open bar, buffet dinner featuring both American classics and gourmet Indian cuisine, entertainment, a selection of awards, and archives from NJGCA’s rich history.  We have also extended invitations to both Lieutenant Governor Kim Guadagno and Ambassador Phil Murphy, the 2017 NJ Gubernatorial Candidates, as the election will be two months after our Gala and NJ’s future hangs in the balance. This event is FREE to members and their spouses. The one thing we ask is that you please use the black envelope and the RSVP card that was provided to you, to let us know if you are coming.  It is very important that we have an accurate headcount, and we can’t allow walk-ins to just show up at the door on the night of the event.  Thank you for your cooperation in this, and we look forward to a great evening of celebrating YOU, NJGCA and all of our accomplishments!  If you have any questions, please call the office at 732-256-9646.

As you all should know, NJGCA hosted a Diner Tour this week in Hillsborough.  We aim to have 10 members in attendance at each breakfast meeting, although last month we were surprised when over 25 members joined us for a lively meeting and to enjoy a breakfast on us. We usually have a good idea ahead of time how many folks will be there, but on Wednesday we didn’t get the participation that we usually experience since many members who had RSVPed their attendance did not show up. Of course that was disappointing to me and our staff, as we enjoy sharing updates and info with NJGCA members. The members who did attend benefitted greatly from the personal question-and-answer session and individualized industry updates relevant to their businesses. I completely understand that the priority is at your place of business, as it should be, but I really do hope that these breakfast meetings will also be viewed as important to your business.  NJGCA’s goal is to have members that are smarter, more informed, and a step ahead of the competition. All we can do is give you access to this information and our expertise through weekly emails and monthly breakfast meetings that we bring to YOUR neighborhood to make it as convenient as possible. We need you to tell us what works best for you and for your business and you should expect that we will be asking for your opinion in the near future, as we continue to try to find new and innovative ways to provide value to our members.

Tim Nerger of Lebanon Friendly Sunoco won the $50 Raffle!

I also want to note that the Weights and Measures Officers Association's annual conference is in Atlantic City on September 6-7. I usually speak at the morning session on the first day of the conference and then join them at their annual golf outing in the afternoon. This year they asked me to invite you to a session on Thursday, September 7th which is day two of the conference. They are planning an industry session to allow YOU the opportunity to participate in a roundtable discussion and discuss your views. Their goal is to allow you to better understand their responsibilities, and create a spirit of cooperation.  I applaud their willingness to hold this event and I am encouraging you to join us. Please reply and let me know if you will attend. The conference is held at the Golden Nugget, and the forum begins at 11AM.  I will meet you there and I will be happy to buy lunch afterwards for any member who participates.

For those of you that have followed my thoughts on the future of our industry, and the future sales of gasoline and diesel fuel, I've mentioned many times that you must stop thinking as if you're in the gasoline and diesel business and begin thinking as if you are in the transportation energy business. Several years ago NJGCA sponsored a forum on natural gas fueled vehicles and I've occasionally discussed electric vehicles and hydrogen fuel cell vehicles. Although I’m not going to get into detail right now, I’m simply going to express my opinion that I believe the fuels of the future are hydrogen and ethanol.  Before you all kill yourselves because I used the word “ethanol,” keep in mind that I put it in the “future fuels” category for the same reason that I put hydrogen in the “future fuels” category, and that is because both are renewable.

Petroleum and fossil fuels are not renewable, and someday there will be a last drop of oil. You haven’t heard me say this in a while because the abundance of petroleum and natural gas which has been discovered in the US has kept energy prices very low. As long as the price of petroleum remains low, then any alternate fuels will have a tough time competing and breaking into the marketplace in a bigger way. Common sense tells me, and should tell you, that this won’t last forever. Every customer that drives a vehicle fueled by electricity, natural gas or hydrogen is a customer not buying gasoline from you, no matter how low you post your price. Most recent attention has been placed on electric vehicles, and in the past week, the news is that although EVs will continue to rise in popularity, the number of them expected on the roads in the future is less than was anticipated several years ago, due to the low cost of crude oil and gasoline.  If you are interested in reading the report recently released by the Fuels Institute, which finds that by 2025 market conditions will make it difficult for EVs to gain 2% market share in the United States, click HERE.

Finally, I wanted to draw your attention to the exclusive July Autopart International Promotion designed especially for NJGCA members.  This month they are offering a $1 gallon of Green or Gold Antifreeze with purchase of a Water Pump, and have a special price on the TP-8616 OPTI-PRO which is a cordless true UV LED leak detection flashlight.  See the flier below for more details.

Thanks for reading -- See you next week!

NEWS AROUND THE STATE: THE NEWS YOU SHOULD KNOW

07/20/2017:
Bronx man beats Clifton gas attendant with squeegee
A 41-year-old Clifton gas station attendant was beaten with a squeegee by a Bronx, NY man upset with the speed of service, police said. Manuel Ruiz, 32, of Bronx, New York, was arrested following the assault, and charged with aggravated assault, possession of a weapon and possession of a weapon for unlawful purpose. The incident occurred at the Jersey Gas fueling station on Lakeview Avenue at about 1 a.m. “A station attendant was out pumping gas but, apparently he was going too slow for one customer’s liking,” reports said. The Jersey Gas employee and Ruiz exchanged words and the Bronx man exited his vehicle and the argument escalated, police said. Ruiz punched the victim and the attendant grabbed a window squeegee to protect himself. According to police, Ruiz took the squeegee from the gas attendant and struck him on the forehead with the tool. When officers arrived the victim was bleeding from his forehead. Police officials said the squeegee is considered a weapon because Ruiz used the item to inflict bodily harm. Two years ago, another Jersey Gas employee was seriously injured in an incident at the Lakeview Avenue business. In July 2015, 19-year-old Uvaldo Mora and a 15-year-old boy from Paterson were arrested following an unsuccessful robbery attempt at the fueling station. The would-be robbers struck and dragged an attendant beneath the Nissan Pathfinder they were driving before crashing into two parked vehicles. Mora and the juvenile then fled on foot.

Bloomfield Exxon Station Robbed At Gunpoint, Suspect Flees Scene
Bloomfield police are investigating an armed robbery that took place at the Exxon Gas Station on Bloomfield Avenue this week. According to the Bloomfield Police Department a male suspect entered the gas station around 3 a.m. to make a purchase, then made his way around the counter and pulled out a black handgun from his waistband. After cashier gave the man an unspecified amount of cash from the register, he got into the passenger side of a red, “older-model” Oldsmobile which fled the scene, police said. Bloomfield officers obtained the license plate number of the vehicle, which the Hillside Police Department reported stolen on Sunday evening.  Nobody suffered injury during the robbery. The male suspect was a black male about 5 feet 10 inches and between 150 to 170 pounds. In an online news advisory, police added that the suspect was in his mid-40's to mid-50's, wearing black framed glasses with a black baseball cap, black t-shirt and dark jeans, and walked with a "pronounced limp" in his right leg. Police are investigating the incident. Bloomfield has seen other recent instances of robbery at gas stations, including an armed robbery at the Shell Gas Station at 19 Beach Street in June and a grab-and-go attempt at the Shell gas station at 460 Bloomfield Ave in April.

Big oil's electric fight against coal and nuclear
The American Petroleum Institute, the nation's biggest and most influential lobbying group for the oil and natural gas industry, is fighting nuclear power subsidies across the US, poised to oppose any efforts to expand renewable electricity, and telling the Trump administration that its study on the power grid better not hurt natural gas in an effort to help coal and nuclear energy. Why it matters: The entry of API into the debate over power generation is a turning point in an industry long dominated by coal and nuclear energy. It's also a shift at an organization traditionally known for focusing on drilling and the transportation sector. API's members, including Exxon Mobil and Royal Dutch Shell, are increasingly producing natural gas, and now the group is fighting to make sure that fuel becomes America's dominant source of electricity. A decade ago, coal powered almost 50% of US electricity. By last year, that figure had dropped to 30%, and natural gas has made up most of the difference. Fueled by the oil and natural gas boom over the last decade, API began moving into the electricity business in late 2015, when it acquired another trade group, America's Natural Gas Alliance, whose sole mission was to pump up demand for natural gas. API's broader mission has come into clearer focus over the last few months in three ways.  To read more of the article, click the link above.

New Jerseyans, not surprisingly, rank high in annual lottery ticket buys
A new study about the lottery-playing habits of Americans has yielded some surprising results -- none more so than the estimated average spending per resident. LendEDU, which is described as an, "independent marketplace for student loans and student loan refinancing,” found that the average American spends $206.69 on lottery tickets each year. It seems impossible given how many people never play the lottery. But $206.69 is less than $5 a week, and people spending $10 per week effectively “make up for” those who don’t play. Then there are those who spend thousands a year -- even if many don’t think of it that way. A $25 per week “habit” gets you to more than $1,250 annually. New Jersey figured to be a leading player, given its pioneering status in the modern lottery, casinos, horse racing, and now its attempt to break Nevada’s near-monopoly on sports betting. But the Garden State ranked just eighth, at $316.52. The Northeast -- however one describes that region -- dominates the list, which is based on newly released 2015 financial documents. Massachusetts residents spend an astonishing $734.85. Number 2 is Rhode Island ($513.75), then Delaware ($420.82), New York ($398.77), and West Virginia ($359.78). Georgia is a surprising sixth at $356.34, followed by -- and we move back north -- Maryland at $354.28. Checking in behind New Jersey are Connecticut at $301.89 and Pennsylvania at $277.42. Even New Hampshire, Maine and Vermont all rank in the top 25 of the 43 states that have state lotteries.

MEMBER BENEFIT PARTNER MESSAGE BOARD:

TMP Energy Solutions

Another Way to Save on Your Energy Bills

We have had a number of NJGCA members successfully reduce their rate per kWh signing up through our energy saving program. We know it's difficult to collect 12 months worth of previous electric bills to get an "accurate" analysis when comparing a variable rate to a fixed rate, but we now have another option available.

This new solution is a power purchase option; the other program is still in full force and has saved members thousands of dollars. If you sign up for the power purchase option, you will be grouped with other NJGCA members until the minimum kW demand is acquired. By pooling the member's usage together, you will be able to take advantage, as large energy users do, and receive a lower kWh rate.

Each member will receive their own contract. Each member is responsible to sign and return the agreement the day it is received in order to secure the price for their group.

Please do your due diligence, so when you receive the proposal and the agreement you will be able to make an intelligent decision.

If by chance, you still want us to assess you bills, to give you a price to compare, we will require 12 months of your most recent utility bills.

There are no bills required, but we would still like to have one bill per meter on file to check account #'s, meter #'s  service addresses and other pertinent information incase there is a problem.

The term of the agreement is for 12 months. During this term period, you will have price protection against any energy price increases along with a low fixed kWh rate.

If you are interested in becoming part of this power purchase option, please contact Greg Cannon at the NJGCA.

Remember when you sign up your energy through the NJGCA Energy Program, TMP makes a considerable donation to the NJGCA Scholarship Fund through their proceeds. This has no affect on your rate, and costs you nothing out of pocket.

We hope to help hundreds of NJGCA members reduce their utility costs by participating in this and our other cost reduction programs.  Our purpose, in the endeavor, is to help NJGCA members lower their energy costs while supporting the NJGCA Scholarship Fund.

Contact GREG CANNON at 732-256-9646 or email Greg at greg@njgca.org. Mention that you are interested in saving money on your energy bills. NJGCA & TMP Energy Solutions will handle all the rest.

POLITICAL PARTICIPATON: THE NJGCA PAC

DEFENDING OUR MEMBERS.
PROTECTING YOUR INTERESTS.
ANSWER THE CALL & CONTRIBUTE TODAY!!

Promoting our agenda in Trenton is of utmost importance to NJGCA and our members.

However, in order to truly affect the debate, we must ensure our friends in the Legislature are re-elected. It is for this reason that your Association has established the NJGCA PAC.

For too long, the weight of funding our Political Action Committee, the arm of the Association responsible for political donations, has rested upon a few. This is not only unfair to those few members who have shouldered this burden, but means we are not utilizing our full strength to affect the debate in Trenton.

To truly understand the importance of supporting our allies, consider our successes in Trenton:

We defeated BELOW COST SELLING
We made history in getting FIRST RIGHT OF REFUSAL signed into law!
We have built large support for RIGHT TO REPAIR and got it passed out of the Assembly
We defended your small business against the false accusations of Attorney General Anne Milgram
We gained wide support to move New Jersey to an all PIF Inspection System and close the CIF lanes
...and MUCH MORE!!

In each instance, we achieved these goals with the help of our friends in the Legislature!

If every member contributes just $100.00 we will be able to provide the help necessary to ensure victory for our allies.

PLEASE SEND YOUR CONTRIBUTIONS TO:
NJGCA PAC
4900 Route 33 West, Suite 100
Wall Township, NJ 07753
Please make your donation payable to NJGCA PAC

I understand that times are tough for all NJGCA members, but this is just as important as any battle we have fought in the past.

We have made great progress in Trenton. I hope that you will answer the call.

*NEW* Energy Information Agency Weekly Retail Gasoline Prices

Each week, the Energy Information Administration publishes a list of average gasoline prices for the previous three weeks. NJGCA will begin including this list with the Weekly Road Warrior.  Remember, these prices are reflective of self-serve everywhere except NJ.
