The big story of this week is of course the midterm election results. The final results overall more or less fell in line with most of the popular predictions. Democrats had a very good night in the House of Representatives, winning control for the first time in eight years. There are several very close races with votes still being counted, but right now it looks like the Democrats will have had a net gain of about 35 seats in the House, more than the 23 they needed to flip it. In the Senate, on the other hand, Republicans will have a net gain of either 2 or 3 seats.

What explains a split like that? It all depended on who specifically was voting. Democratic Senators in North Dakota, Indiana, and Missouri were all defeated in states that voted for Trump in 2016 by double digit margins. The seats in the House that flipped to the Democrats were almost all suburban seats, with higher than average numbers of college-educated whites and higher incomes. Most of these seats were not even competitive 2 or 4 years ago; but just as Trump has gained the Republican Party new voters in some areas, he has cost them in other areas and that is what led to this week’s results.

Turning to New Jersey specifically, it was almost a total sweep for Democrats. Sen. Menendez managed to hold on and win a third term despite the list of corruption allegations against him. Two long serving New Jersey Republicans—Frank LoBiondo and Rodney Frelinghuysen—decided to retire, and Democrats won in both of their seats; Jeff Van Drew (D) defeated Seth Grossman (R) in District 2 (South Jersey) and Mikie Sherrill (D) defeated Jay Webber in District 11 (North Jersey around Morris and Essex). Democrat Tom Malinowski (D) defeated Rep. Lance (R) in District 7 (Central Jersey around Hunterdon-Somerset-Union). As of this writing, we do not know the winner of the 3rd District race (Burlington and Ocean) between Rep. Tom MacArthur (R) and Andy Kim (D), although Mr. Kim has taken a small lead following the counting of mail-in ballots. The winner of that race may not be officially known until the weekend. If Mr. Kim wins, it will mean that the New Jersey House delegation will be split 11 Democrats and just one Republican, the worst performance for the Republican Party in NJ since 1912. Before the 2016 election the split was 6-6. All 12 races will be on the ballot again in 2020.

In terms of the effect on NJGCA, Rep. Lance in particular had been very helpful to us on a few issues in the past, and his presence will be missed. Rep. Frank Pallone (D) from Monmouth County, is now expected to become the Chairman of the House Energy and Commerce Committee, one of the most powerful in Congress and perhaps the most influential when it comes to our industries.

One thing we can all be thankful for: no more campaign commercials!

Many of you attended the first in what will be a series of webinars conducted by NJGCA, this was focused on the new paid sick leave law. A recording of that presentation will soon be available on our website for those that missed it. A special thanks to our presenter, Steven Horowitz, for conducting it.

Finally, Wednesday marked Diwali, an annual holiday celebrated in different forms by many throughout South Asia. I hope everyone who celebrates it had a blessed night with their families.

The New Jersey Inspection Program requires vehicles that fail emissions inspection to go to a Licensed Certified Emission Repair Facility and have a Licensed Emission Repair Technician perform the repairs! When the new Emissions Inspection program begins, a list of Certified Emission Repair Facilities will be given to the vehicle owners who fail the New Jersey Emission Inspection. If you want your business name on the list – make sure you have a Certified Licensed Emission Repair Technician and you are licensed as a Emission Repair Facility! Those signing up for the FULL training course will attend sections 1-10. Recertification classes start November 7.
Full ETEP class fees for members are $2,195 and non-members are &2,395
Recertification fees for members are $729 and non-members are $879.

Fulop Proposes Halting Statue Election To Focus On Payroll Tax
The Fulop administration is backing off its planned relocation of the Katyn monument in an effort to halt an expected delay in a new payroll tax, according to an email obtained by The Jersey Journal. Mayor Steve Fulop sent council members an email on Tuesday asking them to introduce an ordinance Wednesday that would rescind its June 13 ordinance that authorized moving the monument from Exchange Place to York Street. Fulop and his council allies had previously decided to let voters decide via a Dec. 11 referendum whether to reverse the council's June 13 action, but the mayor told council members in his email he's worried that the same petition drive used to try to reverse the council's Katyn ordinance would be used to stop implementation of the payroll tax, a 1 percent business tax intended to help fund the local school district. The tax, which the council is expected to adopt by the end of the year, is opposed by business groups.

Gas Prices Plunge Ahead of Midterms
USA Today reports that gas prices are sliding down quickly ahead of the midterm elections today, falling from a national average of $2.78 per gallon to as low as $2.50 by November 6, according to the Oil Price Information Service (OPIS). In October, gas prices reached a national average of $2.90 per gallon. AAA reported gas prices at 6 cents lower than last week, but still 27 cents higher than a year ago. The U.S. Energy Information Administration reported the average retail gas price at $2.75 per gallon on November 5. Kloza predicted that at least 1,500 stations would post prices of less than $2.25 per gallon by Election Day, November 6.

Trump Allows Iran To Continue Selling Oil To Its 8 Biggest Customers
Iran's oil exports have fallen sharply since President Donald Trump said he would re-impose sanctions on Tehran earlier this year, but with waivers in hand, the Islamic republic's major buyers could scale up orders as soon as next month. The original aim of the sanctions was to cut Iran's oil exports as much as possible, to quash its nuclear and ballistic missile programs, and curb its support for militant proxies, particularly in Syria, Yemen and Lebanon. . .Trump said he wanted to go slow on the sanctions, citing concerns about causing global price spikes.

7-Eleven Pilots Frictionless Payment
The c-store behemoth is piloting a new mobile self-checkout feature, Scan & Pay at select stores. Scan & Pay lets customers skip the checkout line and pay for their purchases using the 7-Eleven app, which houses the already successful 7Rewards loyalty program. The Scan & Pay pilot launched in 14 7-Eleven stores in the Dallas area, giving customers a convenient checkout alternative to waiting in a long line. Scan & Pay works on both Android and iOS devices and is available for all 7-Eleven merchandise excluding items that require cashier assistance — hot foods, financial services and age-verified products such as alcohol, tobacco and lottery tickets. With Scan & Pay, customers can use their smartphones to scan and pay for items while they shop, enabling them to skip the line and get on with their day. This new frictionless shopping experience is integrated into the 7Rewards loyalty program, allowing customers to automatically earn 7Rewards points upon purchase, redeem points to purchase applicable products, as well as receive all in-store promotions.

Another Way to Save on Your Energy Bills

We have had a number of NJGCA members successfully reduce their rate per kWh signing up through our energy saving program. We know it's difficult to collect 12 months worth of previous electric bills to get an "accurate" analysis when comparing a variable rate to a fixed rate, but we now have another option available.

This new solution is a power purchase option; the other program is still in full force and has saved members thousands of dollars. If you sign up for the power purchase option, you will be grouped with other NJGCA members until the minimum kW demand is acquired. By pooling the member's usage together, you will be able to take advantage, as large energy users do, and receive a lower kWh rate.

Each member will receive their own contract. Each member is responsible to sign and return the agreement the day it is received in order to secure the price for their group. Please do your due diligence, so when you receive the proposal and the agreement you will be able to make an intelligent decision.

If by chance, you still want us to assess you bills, to give you a price to compare, we will require 12 months of your most recent utility bills. There are no bills required, but we would still like to have one bill per meter on file to check account #'s, meter #'s service addresses and other pertinent information incase there is a problem.

The term of the agreement is for 12 months. During this term period, you will have price protection against any energy price increases along with a low fixed kWh rate.

Energy Information Agency Weekly Retail Gasoline Prices

Each week, the Energy Information Administration publishes a list of average gasoline prices for the previous three weeks. NJGCA will begin including this list with the Weekly Road Warrior. Remember, these prices are reflective of self-serve everywhere except NJ.
