12/28/2017:
In 4 days, N.J.'s minimum wage will creep up 16˘

A new year on Monday will bring a slight increase in New Jersey's minimum wage. The rate will climb 16˘ to $8.60 an hour. That hike will bump up annual wages for the state's estimated 300,000 minimum wage workers by about $469 apiece, according to New Jersey Policy Perspective, a liberal policy group. A full-time minimum wage earner makes less than $18,000 a year, less than half of the estimated $37,974 a single person needs to be paid to cover basic expenses in NJ.  Annual increases are determined by the consumer price index after the state's voter's approved a constitutional amendment in 2013.  The minimum wage rose from $8.25 in 2015, to $8.38 in 2016, to $8.44 in 2017.  Last year, Democrats who control the Legislature pushed through a $15/hour bill that was ultimately vetoed by Gov. Christie.  Gov.-elect Phil Murphy has said he is in favor of gradually hiking the minimum wage until it reaches $15.00.  NJ is one of 18 states where the minimum wage will increase on Jan. 1^st.  In most of NY, the minimum will increase to $10.40 an hour from $9.70.  NYC’s minimum wage increases to $13 an hour for businesses with at least 11 employees. Pennsylvania's minimum wage remains $7.25 an hour -- the same as the federal amount.

The National Association of Tobacco Outlets (NATO) is partnering with the 2018 Tobacco Plus Expo (TPE) to hold one of its NATO Education Seminars the day before the trade show opens.  The education seminar is titled “NATO Industry Outlook” and will take place Tuesday, Jan. 30, in Las Vegas. The schedule for the NATO seminar event is as follows:

• 12:30 p.m. Wall Street Tobacco Industry Update: Nik Modi, managing director for RBC Capital Markets, New York
• 1:30 p.m. Tobacco Market Trends: Don Burke, senior vice president of Management Science Associates, Pittsburgh
• 3 p.m. Local, State and FDA Update: Thomas Briant, executive director of NATO, Minneapolis
• 4-5 p.m. Networking Reception

• Emergence of automated and assisted driving, and eventually self-driving vehicles;
• Vehicle sharing replacing individual car ownership;
• Energy use moving more strongly to clean fuels; and
• Need-based transportation growing.

Because charging electric vehicles still takes too long for most drivers (an average of 30 minutes), Satyvolu believes a move toward hybrid vehicles is imminent.  "We're going to see a slow but steady adoption of alternative fuel vehicles," he said. "But there will be no one source of energy. It will be a blend of different types of fuel." He also discussed how the "notion of car ownership is undergoing a major shift," noting that projections show an increased penetration of car-sharing services in the near future.

Another Way to Save on Your Energy Bills

We have had a number of NJGCA members successfully reduce their rate per kWh signing up through our energy saving program. We know it's difficult to collect 12 months worth of previous electric bills to get an "accurate" analysis when comparing a variable rate to a fixed rate, but we now have another option available. 

This new solution is a power purchase option; the other program is still in full force and has saved members thousands of dollars. If you sign up for the power purchase option, you will be grouped with other NJGCA members until the minimum kW demand is acquired. By pooling the member's usage together, you will be able to take advantage, as large energy users do, and receive a lower kWh rate.

Each member will receive their own contract. Each member is responsible to sign and return the agreement the day it is received in order to secure the price for their group.

Please do your due diligence, so when you receive the proposal and the agreement you will be able to make an intelligent decision.

If by chance, you still want us to assess you bills, to give you a price to compare, we will require 12 months of your most recent utility bills.

There are no bills required, but we would still like to have one bill per meter on file to check account #'s, meter #'s  service addresses and other pertinent information incase there is a problem.

The term of the agreement is for 12 months. During this term period, you will have price protection against any energy price increases along with a low fixed kWh rate.
