Black Market for Cigarettes Flourishes under New York’s High Tobacco Taxes
High tobacco taxes in NY have fueled its black market for cigarettes, according to a new national survey by the Tax Foundation.  The survey estimated that 56.8% of all cigarettes smoked in the state came from illegal sources. NY has the highest rate of smuggling among all the states, and the survey pointed to the fact that it also has the highest state cigarette tax ($4.35 per pack, with NYC tacking on an extra $1.50) in the country.  Contraband cigarettes in NY have jumped close to 60% since 2006, during which the cigarette tax rate skyrocketed 190%.  The flourishing back market for cigarettes has hurt independent and chain retailers across the state, said James Calvin, director of the NY State Association of Convenience Stores. He pointed to the lack of planning to deal with illegal trafficking when lawmakers began raising tobacco taxes as paving the way to today’s contraband problem. “What's going on now is costing legitimate licensed retailers and wholesalers billions of dollars in sales,” he said. “That money could have been used to reinvest in NY businesses and increase employment in NY.” NY officials countered that they have safeguards in place, such as revoking state-issued licenses for alcohol or lottery tickets of retailers who sell contraband tobacco to deter smuggling. But Calvin said that it’s too little, too late, adding that the “cigarette strike force” launched in 2014 didn’t make significant inroads on stopping tobacco smuggling.

Tesla Semi: 500-mile range, lower running costs than diesel... and it's fast
The long-awaited Tesla Semi electric truck was unveiled Thursday night and it promises to shake up the shipping industry by significantly reducing the cost of transporting goods from point-to-point. Tesla CEO Elon Musk unveiled the Semi at a private event in California, where he touted a 500-mile range when loaded to 80,000-pound maximum weight allowed under federal highway regulations for Class 8 trucks. Musk said that the Semi's battery can be topped off to a 400-mile range in 30 minutes. That 500 mile figure is about half the range of a typical diesel truck, but Musk shrugged off the deficit by pointing out that the Tesla Semi accelerates faster and will be less costly to operate. Musk said that diesel trucks cost as much as 20 percent more than what Tesla projects for its electric Semi. A large battery is integrated into the Semi's chassis. The truck has four motors, one for each of its rear wheels. Despite its visual heft, the cab is a day cab, meaning it doesn't have a bed.

U.S. to Dominate Oil Markets after Biggest Boom in World History
The US will be a dominant force in global oil and gas markets for many years to come as the shale boom becomes the biggest supply surge in history, the International Energy Agency predicted. By 2025, the growth in American oil production will equal that achieved by Saudi Arabia at the height of its expansion, and increases in natural gas will surpass those of the former Soviet Union, the agency said in its annual World Energy Outlook. The boom will turn the US, still among the biggest oil importers, into a net exporter of fossil fuels. “The US will be the undisputed leader of global oil and gas markets for decades to come,” IEA Executive Director Fatih Birol said. “There’s big growth coming from shale oil, and as such there’ll be a big difference between the US and other producers.” The agency raised estimates for the amount of shale oil that can be technically recovered by about 30 percent to 105 billion barrels. Forecasts for shale-oil output in 2025 were bolstered by 34 percent to 9 million barrels a day. The US industry “has emerged from its trial-by-fire as a leaner and hungrier version of its former self, remarkably resilient and reacting to any sign of higher prices caused by OPEC’s return to active market management,” the IEA said. While oil prices have recovered to a two-year high above $60 a barrel, they’re still about half the level traded earlier this decade, as the global market struggles to absorb the scale of the U.S. bonanza. It’s taken OPEC and Russia almost 11 months of production cuts to clear up some of the oversupply.

Another Way to Save on Your Energy Bills

We have had a number of NJGCA members successfully reduce their rate per kWh signing up through our energy saving program. We know it's difficult to collect 12 months worth of previous electric bills to get an "accurate" analysis when comparing a variable rate to a fixed rate, but we now have another option available. 

This new solution is a power purchase option; the other program is still in full force and has saved members thousands of dollars. If you sign up for the power purchase option, you will be grouped with other NJGCA members until the minimum kW demand is acquired. By pooling the member's usage together, you will be able to take advantage, as large energy users do, and receive a lower kWh rate.

Each member will receive their own contract. Each member is responsible to sign and return the agreement the day it is received in order to secure the price for their group.

Please do your due diligence, so when you receive the proposal and the agreement you will be able to make an intelligent decision.

If by chance, you still want us to assess you bills, to give you a price to compare, we will require 12 months of your most recent utility bills.

There are no bills required, but we would still like to have one bill per meter on file to check account #'s, meter #'s  service addresses and other pertinent information incase there is a problem.

The term of the agreement is for 12 months. During this term period, you will have price protection against any energy price increases along with a low fixed kWh rate.
