EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR'S MESSAGE: GREETINGS & SAL-UTATIONS!

NJGCA MEETS WITH GOVERNOR’S COUNSEL TO DISCUSS PAID FAMILY LEAVE
JOIN NJGCA IN CELEBRATING 80 YEARS AT OUR GALA!
BREAKFAST MEETING IN HILLSBOROUGH ON WEDNESDAY, JULY 19TH

Since the Legislature FINALLY went on vacation, there aren’t too many policy-related issues to discuss, but Eric and I did meet with the Governor’s Counsel on Thursday. We are actively advocating for the Governor to conditionally veto the expansion of paid family leave. This means he would keep some parts of the legislation and veto other parts. Although we don’t like many provisions in the bill, we are most concerned about the threshold at which the “exemption” kicks in. Currently, businesses with more than 50 employees are required to “hold” an employee’s position open so that an employee still has their job open when they return from their paid leave.  The business can of course hire a temporary worker to fill the position, but that temporary worker will have to be terminated when the original employee’s leave is over. Any business with less than 50 employees is “exempt” from this requirement, and has the ability to immediately and permanently fill a position that becomes vacant as a result of an employee taking leave.

The legislation that is on the Governor’s desk will lower the exemption from businesses with less than 50 employees to businesses with less than 20 employees. If we can keep the exemption at 50 employees rather than 20 employees it will take some of the burden away from most of you. We will keep you updated on any further communication we have with the Governor on this issue.

That’s it with regard to actions in Trenton but now let me talk about the invitations you have all received in the mail for the celebration of NJGCA’s 80th anniversary!  I am asking you to make every effort to RSVP (using the RSVP card) and let us know you will be attending. We want to have a nice evening with all of our members, and we have made the event complimentary for you and your spouse! We plan to give out some awards and recognize people for their contributions over the years. We also have memorabilia from the past 80 years which depict our rich history, and will be on display at the event!  Finally, we are inviting the gubernatorial candidates to join us as well, as New Jersey is facing a very important election in November, less than two months after the Gala. You will be reading and hearing much more about this event in the next two months, and we truly hope you will join us in celebrating NJGCA.

Finally, for anyone in Somerset County, we will be hosting our July breakfast meeting at the IHOP at 260 Route 206 South in Hillsborough on Wednesday, July 19th at 9:30 AM. I hope that you can join us to discuss the critical issues affecting the industry right now, learn what NJGCA has been working on, and tell us face-to-face what your priorities and concerns are. All members get a free breakfast thanks to our generous MBPs who sponsor these events. We hope that you can get out of the shop for 2 hours to get all the latest information about what’s going on in the industry and to meet your colleagues and fellow business owners in your area!
Thanks for reading -- See you next week!

NEWS AROUND THE STATE: THE NEWS YOU SHOULD KNOW

07/13/2017:
Masked robber caught on video beating gas station worker in Summit, NJ
Police released security camera video showing a masked robber beating a gray-haired service station attendant over the head with a large wrench. The robbery occurred at the Shell station, 6 River Road, Summit about 11 p.m. Sunday.  In the video, the worker, who appears slightly stooped over, enters his work booth and the robber follows right behind him. As the worker moves towards a cash register, the robber raises his arm and strikes the victim from behind, swinging at him three times and the worker turns and rushes out of the booth to escape the attack. The robber first approached the victim outside the booth and demanded money. The attack occurred as the worker was attempting to comply with the robber's demand. After the worker fled the booth, the robber grabbed cash from the register and fled on foot, running northeast on River Road. The worker called 911 and officers arrived to find the victim with a large cut across his forehead. The man was taken to Morristown Medical Center for treatment of the wound. Police aided by a Union County Sheriff's Department police dog searched the area but were unable to find the attacker. Authorities describe the robber as a Caucasian male about five-foot, 10-inches tall, with a medium build, and wearing a dark hooded sweat shirt, green gloves and a dark bandana covering his face. Police are asking that anyone with information about this case call the Summit police Detective Bureau at (908) 273-0051.

What’s Fueling the Growth of E15?
With its 2012 introduction, E15 became the highest concentration ethanol blend available for use in most traditional gasoline-powered vehicles. But it raised a lot of eyebrows. Consumers, it was theorized, might confuse E15 with other ethanol blends, put it in the wrong vehicle or not understand its purpose at all. As E15 has become more widely distributed, most myths have been dispelled. The higher-margin, higher-octane fuel is now sold by retailers large and small at nearly 900 locations across 29 states. While some drivers understand E15’s environmental and performance benefits, many are lured by E15’s lower price. Others like that it generates American jobs and alleviates foreign oil dependence. Regardless of the reason, once people try E15, they tend to become hooked. E15 can cost up to 10¢ per gallon less than other fuels. It can generate margins about 4¢ per gallon higher than those garnered by standard E10 fuel, and retailers typically experience a 15% increase in their overall fuel business within 12 months. E15 carries an 88 octane rating and is said to substantially improve a vehicle’s performance. E15 contains 15% ethanol, making it more environmentally friendly than E10. Unlike E85 and other ethanol blends introduced in recent years, E15 use is not limited to flex-fuel vehicles. E15 works in conventional vehicles manufactured in 2001 and beyond (it is not recommended for motorcycle, chain saw and other small gas engines). While there is no “typical” E15 customer, it is popular among taxi and Uber drivers and other high-volume users.

Ethanol-free gas usage drops in 2016, still exceeds EPA’s expectations
Expecting demand for ethanol-free gasoline to dwindle last year, the EPA instead found that usage came in at more than double their estimates, as reported in the EPA’s proposal to cut total ethanol volumes in fuel for the first time. “For the 2016 and 2017 standards, we based the total renewable fuel volume requirement in part on the expectation that the Renewable Fuel Standard program would result in all but a tiny portion – estimated at 200 million gallons – of gasoline to contain at least 10% ethanol…We now estimate that the volume of E0 used in 2016 was about 500 million gallons.” In 2015, retailers sold an estimated 700 million gallons of ethanol-free gasoline. Like last year, the EPA attributed 200 million gallons of ethanol-free fuel demand to recreational boaters, and either ignored or dismissed ethanol-free demand from owners of older vehicles ill-equipped to run ethanol-blended fuels. Instead, agency officials appeared to explain the persistent non-boater demand for non-ethanol fuels as a result of increased usage of biodiesel.

MEMBER BENEFIT PARTNER MESSAGE BOARD:

TMP Energy Solutions

Another Way to Save on Your Energy Bills

We have had a number of NJGCA members successfully reduce their rate per kWh signing up through our energy saving program. We know it's difficult to collect 12 months worth of previous electric bills to get an "accurate" analysis when comparing a variable rate to a fixed rate, but we now have another option available.

This new solution is a power purchase option; the other program is still in full force and has saved members thousands of dollars. If you sign up for the power purchase option, you will be grouped with other NJGCA members until the minimum kW demand is acquired. By pooling the member's usage together, you will be able to take advantage, as large energy users do, and receive a lower kWh rate.

Each member will receive their own contract. Each member is responsible to sign and return the agreement the day it is received in order to secure the price for their group.

Please do your due diligence, so when you receive the proposal and the agreement you will be able to make an intelligent decision.

If by chance, you still want us to assess you bills, to give you a price to compare, we will require 12 months of your most recent utility bills.

There are no bills required, but we would still like to have one bill per meter on file to check account #'s, meter #'s  service addresses and other pertinent information incase there is a problem.

The term of the agreement is for 12 months. During this term period, you will have price protection against any energy price increases along with a low fixed kWh rate.

If you are interested in becoming part of this power purchase option, please contact Greg Cannon at the NJGCA.

Remember when you sign up your energy through the NJGCA Energy Program, TMP makes a considerable donation to the NJGCA Scholarship Fund through their proceeds. This has no affect on your rate, and costs you nothing out of pocket.

We hope to help hundreds of NJGCA members reduce their utility costs by participating in this and our other cost reduction programs.  Our purpose, in the endeavor, is to help NJGCA members lower their energy costs while supporting the NJGCA Scholarship Fund.

Contact GREG CANNON at 732-256-9646 or email Greg at greg@njgca.org. Mention that you are interested in saving money on your energy bills. NJGCA & TMP Energy Solutions will handle all the rest.

POLITICAL PARTICIPATON: THE NJGCA PAC

DEFENDING OUR MEMBERS.
PROTECTING YOUR INTERESTS.
ANSWER THE CALL & CONTRIBUTE TODAY!!

Promoting our agenda in Trenton is of utmost importance to NJGCA and our members.

However, in order to truly affect the debate, we must ensure our friends in the Legislature are re-elected. It is for this reason that your Association has established the NJGCA PAC.

For too long, the weight of funding our Political Action Committee, the arm of the Association responsible for political donations, has rested upon a few. This is not only unfair to those few members who have shouldered this burden, but means we are not utilizing our full strength to affect the debate in Trenton.

To truly understand the importance of supporting our allies, consider our successes in Trenton:

We defeated BELOW COST SELLING
We made history in getting FIRST RIGHT OF REFUSAL signed into law!
We have built large support for RIGHT TO REPAIR and got it passed out of the Assembly
We defended your small business against the false accusations of Attorney General Anne Milgram
We gained wide support to move New Jersey to an all PIF Inspection System and close the CIF lanes
...and MUCH MORE!!

In each instance, we achieved these goals with the help of our friends in the Legislature!

If every member contributes just $100.00 we will be able to provide the help necessary to ensure victory for our allies.

PLEASE SEND YOUR CONTRIBUTIONS TO:
NJGCA PAC
4900 Route 33 West, Suite 100
Wall Township, NJ 07753
Please make your donation payable to NJGCA PAC

I understand that times are tough for all NJGCA members, but this is just as important as any battle we have fought in the past.

We have made great progress in Trenton. I hope that you will answer the call.
